Fish for dinner

The La Cruz Fish Mercado Del Mar

Every beach town has a fish market, and some have several fresh fish shops, bringing to you the fresh catches of the day. We are lucky to be staying on Banderas Bay.  Banderas Bay is the largest natural Bay in Mexico, among the 10th largest worldwide, and one of the deepest bays in the world reaching depths of over 3,000 feet.  Extending across 68 kilometers (42 miles) of the Pacific Coast, the bay begins in the south at Puerto Vallarta, flows northwest into the Riviera Nayarit at Bucerias.

La Cruz is a very popular fishing village in the area,  especially if you live in Bucerias.  Every Sunday, there is a giant market at the marina with music, arts and crafts, home grown everything you can imagine, and of course, the fish market.  That's where we buy the best carrot cake in the world (so far) from Todd.   The trade of fishing has supported the local fishermen and their families since the beginning of the pueblos.

When buying fish, what is better than being able to go a fish market, like the La Cruz Marina Fish Market, and purchase a freshly caught fish, shrimp, lobsters, oysters or other ocean favorites!  It really doesn’t get fresher than that, unless you are out fishing yourself!

The fishermen at La Cruz are there every day of the week selling their fresh catch.
Check out this video I took today...

It can be overwhelming with the many different types of fish at the market, and they don’t always have the same kind of fish. It depends on what is “running” that day, and their luck, I suppose!
Kathy and Bill took us to the La Cruz Marina Fish Market  this morning to purchase something tasty for supper tonight.  Kathy decided on the sturgeon, only to discover later, that it is best to freeze this fish first, to kill any undesirable creatures living inside it.  We have eaten the red snapper (pargo) before, and it is wonderful!  Jack is staring at the pargo's big flat red nose.  This fish is very sought after by the commercial fishermen because they know that tourists love it.

It is also helpful to know a little Spanish since most of the market people do not speak English.
"Que es esto?"  (what is it?) is helpful.

Purchasing a whole fish is not as expensive as having them filet one for you.  They expertly cut the fish, and clean the small bones and cut out the blood line, which is the deep red strip inside. This can make your fish taste “fishy”.  These guys will also peel your shrimp for a few extra pesos!  You can also ask for the trimmings to make your own fish stock for delicious soups.

Well the experience was great and we learned a lot but tonight we are eating chicken.  The sturgeon will happen on another night.

A BIG thanks to Kathy, Bill, and Jack for hosting us for almost a week.  Tomorrow, Sue and I move into the "tree house" at Ana Ruth's down near Bucerias Centro.

News flash just in...
last year Jack learned to swim thanks to Sue.  This year Jack learned to dive, thanks to Rob!

Sweet Things

Last year, our favourite dessert bakery in Bucerias was called, "Sweet Things".  So today, after our 1 and 1/2 hour walk on the beach, checking out all the sand art, we decided to visit Sweet Things and buy some ginger cookies.  Well, it was gone and so was our favourite baker in all of Mexico, Jessica.   Maybe she moved back to Saskatchewan.  Discouraged, we went searching for a sugar fix.  It didn't take long until we came across an outdoor mini St. Jacob's market in a vacant lot near the Kissing Bridge.  You will never guess who was selling dates squares and oatmeal cookies loaded with fresh ginger ... you're right!, Jessica.  We bought 4 giant date treats and 3 super giant cookies.  Our morning was complete.  We munched and licked our lips and fingers, while enjoying the provisional art on the bridge.  Only Bryan R. will know what that means.  Robert decided to pose for picture near a dead tree.  The light was perfect!

The weatherman called for rain today but it just got hotter and hotter as the afternoon progressed.  We decided to spend the time in Kathy and Bill's pool.  Bob, their 56 year old surfer friend, dropped by for a visit.  He's the guy who sold me his 12 string guitar last year.  Bob entertained us with his surfing stories and listed all the best breakers along the Nayarit Banderas Bay coast.  Bill, Kathy, Sue, and I sipped on whiskey coolers and dreamt about conquering the tubes and stairs of the high seas - if Bob could do it, so could we.

Around 4 p.m., we started to prepare a magnificent steak stir fry.  The carrots, mushrooms, garlic, peppers, and onions never tasted sooooo good! Well, everything tastes better here.  It must be the sunshine.   We finished the evening off taking pictures of the sunset on the beach.  No school for Jack tomorrow and Gracie loves the sound of other dogs barking in the neighbourhood.

Maybe we will search for fresh mahi mahi tomorrow.

Provisional!

It's all about the light!

Save the turtles!

Stairway to heaven!

La Vida es buena

Today started early with a 3 mile walk through the dunes and then up through the everglades to the Mega Mall grocery store.  Sue and Rob had a few special items to pick up for lunch and there is a secure neighbourhood close to the Mega Mall which has a sports complex including an Olympic size outdoor swimming pool.  Sue and Rob wanted to investigate that pool and find out the cost for using it to swim laps for 2 months.
Back at "La Vida es buena", Bill was preparing to drop Jack off at school before taking Kathy to Walmart Mexico for a hair makeover.  Jack was having a special day at school because a local drama troupe was visiting and the kids were going to participate in the play.
After lunch, it was siesta time.  Rob and Sue worked on the "Zombie" picture, while Kathy did her yoga.  Bill was off exploring on his motorbike in the Centro.
It wasn't until Kathy was getting dressed for her special evening at the local French restaurant, that she found a "wolf" spider in her underwear.  Sue came to the rescue and deposited the spider across the street at the neighbour's.
Sue and Rob found time to play with Jack in the pool and take a walk down to the beach and enjoy the late afternoon ocean breezes.  Many new coloured tiles were found for Rob's tile sculptures that he is making.  He plans to sell the sculptures on the beach next week to the tourists, that pass by his tree house.  Rob and Sue are moving into their tree house on Sunday.  That's the day that an unusual rain storm is arriving.  Stay tuned!  By the way, watch this video ... http://youtu.be/TiNaIOXp-xg

Windy Plaza

Bucerias, the wind capital of Riviera Nayarit, unveiled its new icon on Father’s Day at Bucerias’ Main Plaza, also known as Plaza del Viento (or windy plaza). Its final installation will take place in the near future. This monument was created to honor local divers and it’s set to become an icon for the community. Sculptor Octavio González Gutiérrez, a native of Jalisco, created the seven meter tall piece out of stainless steel with bronze finishes in collaboration with local sculptor Luis Armando Solorio.

Prince Jack attends a local pre-school every day with half day Spanish and half day English.  Here he is in his school uniform.

Nana Kathy is becoming quite the fitness fanatic.  Every day, she walks on the beach, exercises in the pool, and does a strenuous yoga routine.

The Hickey Hacienda

If you like ceramic tiles, beautiful tall palms, wide open spaces, multi levels, and complete privacy in a safe neighbourhood, only steps to the beach, then you would like this Spanish dwelling in Bucerias.  The Hickeys selected a great abode to spend 3 months in Mexico.
We spent our first day relaxing around the pool, creating a zombie picture with Jack, and visiting the beach around 4 p.m.  It was a hot day!  Bill prepared a scrumptious steak dinner with all the trimmings.  Even Gracie got in on the action.
