Benito Juarez Day

For the past few days, there have been a lot of extra police in Bucerias and along the coastal highway.  Not only that, a helicopter has been cruising the area every day.  Rumor has it that the Mexican President, Enrique Nena Pieto  is in town.  Why you might ask?  Because today is a very special day.

Astronomically speaking, if you live in the northern hemisphere, then yesterday at 6:45 p.m., was the first day of spring.  That's special for many, after a long hard winter in Canada.  But here in Mexico,  March 21 is a very important day too.  Benito Pablo Juárez García, (21 March 1806 – 18 July 1872,] was a Mexican lawyer and politician of Zapotec origin from Oaxaca, who served as the president of Mexico for five terms: 1858–1861 as interim, then 1861–1865, 1865–1867, 1867–1871 and 1871–1872 as constitutional president.  He resisted the French occupation of Mexico, overthrew the Second Mexican Empire, restored the Republic, and used liberal measures to modernize the country.  He is a Mexican "hero".

This is how people living in Mexico celebrate Benito's birthday ...

drink Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile

live in tree houses

hang out with friends who wear hats

sit in a cave with a life long friend

hike in the jungle looking for crocodiles

build a beach sculpture

watch a female yellow crowned night heron sit in our parrot tree

eat squid, shrimp and octopus for supper
